Yamaha YPT400MS Portable Electronic Keyboard

May 19th, 2008 No Comments   Posted in Gadget

There are many tools in the keyboard that make it easy to be a power user from the first day you own the keyboard.

  • Music Finder:
Complete keyboard setups by song title. The keyboard selects an appropriate voice for the right hand melody, the correct musical style and the correct tempo. Simply call up a song title and start playing.
  • One Touch Setting (OTS):
Provides you with a recommended voice with effects for each style. For example, on a jazz style OTS might be piano, for a Latin style it might be acoustic guitar and for a rock style it might be a guitar with overdrive etc.
  • Registration Memory:
Set the keyboard up just the way you like and take a digital snapshot by memorizing it to one of the Registration buttons. Load and save up to 16 Registrations to User memory. The Registration buttons are conveniently located just above the keyboard.

    • Performance Assistant Technology:
Performance assistant technology is a feature from Yamaha that guarantees that you can’t play a wrong melody note or chord. Here’s how it works. Select a song, press the Performance Assistant button Chord Mode and play the keyboard – any notes you like. Every note you play will fit the music! If you move up the keyboard, the pitch goes up. If you move down, the pitch goes down. Play a perfect arpeggio, or play chords in time with the music, or really “go for it” and play a solo. As long as performance assistant is “on”, you’re “on”. Imagine being able to give a concert to your friends or relatives the very first day that you bring this remarkable keyboard home. Well, with the YPT-400 and performance assistant technology, you can! This keyboard is the first in the line to offer Chord/Free Mode in addition to Chord Mode described above. Chord/Free Mode allows those that have learned a melody with their right hand to have the keyboard correct the notes of their left hand. This allows you to concentrate on one hand at a time while learning. Play the correct notes with the right and any notes with the left and you’re making beautiful music. In addition to working with any of the internal songs with chords, this feature also works with XF MIDI files.

Yamaha Education Suite: Helps you learn to play
The YPT-400 has 30 built-in songs, plus 70 more on an included CD-ROM, for you to learn to play using the Yamaha Education Suite. The songs are separated into left and right hand parts, providing 7 levels of lessons plus a convenient chord dictionary.

  • Three keyboard lessons for each hand
    • Waiting Mode – stops the playback of a song until you find the correct note and then continues.
    • Your Tempo Mode – Learn to play the correct notes with the correct timing. Song playback tempo will vary to match the speed you are playing at. The song will slow down when you play wrong notes, so you can learn at your own pace.
    • Minus One Mode – Here’s where you can perfect your technique. The song will play at the normal tempo, minus the part you have chosen to play. Play along while listening to the song.
  • Lesson Grading – monitors your progress as you practice each lesson and gives you a grade.
  • Repeat and Learn – The song location will move back four measures from the point at which you pressed the button, and playback will begin after a one measure count-in. This section will repeat allowing you to practice until perfect!
  • Chord Dictionary – shows you how to play chords and tells you which chords you are playing by displaying the notes and chord names on the LCD screen.

Easy Song Arranger
You can change the “feel”, or arrangement, of songs by simply pressing the Easy Song Arranger button, allowing you to re-mix any MIDI file. For example, you can try your favorite song with a Rock feel, Hip Hop, then Jazz. It’s fast, powerful and one-button simple.

Auto Accompaniment Styles
In addition to the 100 songs mentioned above, the YPT-400 also has auto accompaniment styles that “follow” your playing. Simply select a style of music from the 150 built-in Styles (example Rock), play a chord and the YPT-400 will create a backup band (bass, drums, strings, guitar etc.) and “follow” you through the song. You can play your songs and try different genres of music.

Digital Effects
Yamaha has long been a world leader in digital signal processing technology. In fact, Yamaha professional audio products are found in most professional recording studios around the world. The YPT-400 takes full advantage of this know-how, giving you an extensive range of nine, top-quality reverb effects that simulate playing in everything from a small room to a large spacious concert hall and four chorus effects that add richness to electric pianos and guitars in particular. You’ll also find 26 types of Harmony effects for your melody parts.

2-Way Speaker System with a Bass Boost System
Separate woofers and tweeters deliver sounds with clarity and precision for more lifelike instrument voices. Also, a special port on each speaker adds a powerful impact to bass sound reproduction.

USB Connectivity
The YPT-400 comes with 30 built-in songs plus 70 more on an included CD-ROM and an interactive lesson system, divided into left and right hand parts, for learning them. In addition, you have the ability to connect to a computer via USB, download more songs from the Internet into the internal Flash ROM (PC only), and use all of the Yamaha Education Suite features to help you learn to play them. Yamaha makes it easy to get connected with the new PC button. Now, instead of wading through function menus and fighting through a maze of selections, one button is your expressway to music on the web and your computer. In addition, once connected, you can play your songs into the computer (PC and Mac), edit them if necessary, and e-mail them to your friends and family. And with General MIDI (GM) and XGlite compatibility, song data always plays back with the correct sounds.

Iron Maiden: Live After Death

I won’t spend much time talking about all of the fantastic things about this video, because everyone already knows how great this classic concert film is. 2 things I will point out that I really like about the DVD release are:

- The 5.1 sound is great. Generally I prefer the stereo track on DVD concert videos, but this is an exception. The 5.1 mix is much better than the stereo mix on this release

- All of the bonus material on Disc 2 is great, and a lot of fun to watch for the first time.

Now on to why I’m giving it 4 stars instead of 5:

- I was really hoping they would clean up the video quality for the DVD release. It looks like it was ported over from a slightly faded, grainy VHS tape. With that being said, I am watching this on a big 52″ TV and that may be revealing more of the video limitations than a smaller TV will.

Also, just as a note, the preview video at Amazon clearly shows the LAD concert footage in a widescreen format. The LAD concert is actually in 4:3 format, and not 16:9 as shown in the preview. This is probably a good thing, though, as converting it to 16:9 would have resulted in the cropping of the original aspect ratio.

Even though I think that they could have done a much better job cleaning up the original picture quality, this is still a must have DVD for your concert DVD collection. After all these years, it’s still at the top of the list as one of the best heavy metal concerts ever captured on tape.

Slash (Hardcover)

May 17th, 2008 No Comments   Posted in Book

The story of Guns N’ Roses is one of the most controversial in rock n’ roll history. GNR has had a famously terse relationship with journalists and authors, and in recent years, former band members have publicly disagreed about the “real story” in the press. The band even threatened bodily harm to journalists in the lyrics of the Use Your Illusion albums! For the first time ever, someone on the inside has gone on record with to describe the genesis of the band, how they wrote and performed one of the most definitive rock albums of all time, the changes in the band’s lineup, and finally, the implosion of all things GNR related. Who knew it would be the notoriously private lead guitarist, a soft-spoken man hidden behind a famous mop of hair, who would step up and tell the story?

Slash’s memoir is the diary of a dope fiend (released a month after the autobiography of his friend and former heroin-buddy Nikki Sixx). Well, the diary of a dope-, and women- and coke- and crack- and alcohol-fiend. Have anything else debaucherous? The late 1980’s and 1990’s Slash would have tried it for sure. During one cocaine-induced hallucination of an attack by blue-gray Predator-like creatures with machine guns, Slash punched out his glass shower door and ran naked into the streets in terror. The incident got Slash into rehab, but no sooner than his limo driver picked up the “cured” ax man, he was downing half a liter of vodka in the backseat.

What doesn’t Slash want to talk about? Well, don’t bother asking if GNR is getting back together (I’m not even going to acknowledge the current faux-lineup). Slash says it won’t happen, ever. The ten-years-delayed release of Axl’s Chinese Democracy album? Slash gets asked that question in every interview, and he leaves it out of his memoir. In an interview about the book, Slash stated “Axl works in a different time zone than I do. So what may seem like a long time to other people is a tick of the clock to him. It’ll come out, though. It will.” Even Axl’s famous tour cancellations and delays are treated matter-of-factly–Slash doesn’t attempt to analyze or explain the behavior of his bandmate, nor does he seethe with anger or resentment.

Others have tried to write the history of the band, but most are hacks or fanboys who strung together quotes from numerous previously published sources. Before Slash spoke up, the only other worthwhile title was rock journalist Mick Wall’s The Most Dangerous Band in the World (1992), and the VH1 Behind the Music production (2004). Thank you, Slash, for letting all rock fans into the inner world of GNR, featuring your toxic twin Steven, current bandmate and forever friend Duff, the laid-back and gifted Izzy, and the enigmatic Axl. You’ve treated the story with humor, candor, honesty, self-reflection, and respect, even for those from whom you are currently estranged.

The High Kings

May 13th, 2008 No Comments   Posted in DVD

At this point, I think people associate David Downes with the Internationally sensational group, Celtic Woman. In that group, what started as a humble beginning, the act of putting together an incredible show for PBS, grew into a world-renowned and world-loved music.

Well, he did it again. Each of these singers and performers are true musicians- they sing, they play, they come from families of musicians, and they perform in such a way that leaves the audience breathless after each song- either because of the excitement in the song, such as “Marie’s Wedding”, “Phil the Fluther’s Ball”, “Rocky Road to Dublin” (to name a few); or by the gentle longing harmonies found in “Galway to Graceland”, “Paddy’s Green Shamrock Shore”, and “The Parting Glass”.

One point I would like to emphasize- this is by no means an attempt to make masculine Celtic Woman; this is not Celtic Man. This is a group of men who each bring a unique sound to make wonderful harmonies found in each of these songs on the DVD. Celtic Woman has a healthy blend of multi-cultural songs- classics, modern, new, and traditional folk ballads. The High Kings only perform Irish ballads, and they bring great credit to the songs they perform.

These songs are not lullabies, by any stretch of the imagination (IMO). “Marie’s Wedding” and “Phil the Fluther’s Ball” (which makes Brian Dunphy sound like a Celtic Elvis- fantastic!) left my heart racing after I heard them one night (OK, about the 4th or 5th time that night)- I honestly got about 2 hours of sleep after listening to these songs. But that’s how good they are. If music can make the listener excited and provoke emotion and enthusiasm, the job of the “music-makers” is fulfilled. If that were the job-description of the High Kings: to leave the listeners and audiences breathless, excited, happy, joyful, then their job is complete.

This music, while the songs are Irish ballads, are not solely meant for the Irish or for those with Irish blood. These are meant for all people to enjoy. Great music does not discriminate among gender, age, or race; and this is great music.

Girls Like Us: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon

May 12th, 2008 No Comments   Posted in Book

Girls Like Us is about three women whose courageous, defiant talent defined a generation. Whether you read it to rediscover that wonderfully stormy time — the ’60s and early feminist movement — or to discover it for the first time, take it to heart. Sacrifice, hard work, and daring to dream is still the tale of girls like us.” — Carole Radziwill, author of the New York Times bestseller What Remains: A Memoir of Fate, Friendship, and Love

“More than the story of three pop stars, Girls Like Us chronicles a generation of young women who had a moving determination to recast their lives and loves as high adventure. Weller beautifully captures the mammoth enterprise of making a new womanhood.” — Christine Stansell, author of American Moderns: Bohemian New York and the Creation of a New Century

“Juicy and politically astute, this book is a page-turner, and it fills a gaping hole in the history of the counterculture.” — Peter Biskind, bestselling author of Easy Riders, Raging Bulls: How the Sex-Drugs-and-Rock ‘n’ Roll Generation Changed Hollywood

“Reading Girls Like Us is like sneaking into a reunion of the hippest class from the ’60s…where all the secrets come spilling out after the third glass of wine.” — Suzanne Finstad, bestselling author of Natasha: A Biography of Natalie Wood

“A wild ride through an important part of rock history that too often has been overlooked. This book will stay on my shelf next to albums like Blue and Tapestry, places I turn to to capture a more innocent and romantic era in music and in my life.” — Charles R. Cross, bestselling author of Room Full of Mirrors: A Biography of Jimi Hendrix

“There were five books by my bedside when Girls Like Us arrived, but this was the book I had to keep reading. It’s filled with nuggets I hadn’t known about, and this generation of women is my subject! If you love the singers and the songs, you’ll tear through Girls Like Us.” — Sara Davidson, bestselling author of Loose Change: Three Women of the Sixties and Leap!: What Will We Do with the Rest of Our Lives?
